INTRODUCTION: The transport sector is experiencing a profound technological revolution, with emerging innovations in intelligent optimization, sustainable energy, and advanced connectivity promising to redefine efficiency, safety, and service delivery. Concurrently, transport cooperatives stand as significant economic and social entities globally, playing a crucial role in both freight and passenger mobility. Despite their importance, the scope to which these member-owned organizations are engaging with, adopting, or adapting to this technological shift remains largely unexamined. AIMS: This paper addresses this critical intersection by systematically mapping the literature on emerging technologies in transportation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, this review first establishes the state of the art, identifying key trends in areas such as dynamic routing and flow control, multimodal transport integration, alternative energy and electrification, and secure communication systems. RESULTS: The primary finding of this systematic search is the revelation of a significant research scarcity in literature, specifically uniting the application, challenges, and impacts of these advanced technologies within the unique context of transport cooperatives. This gap gives rise to critical questions concerning how cooperatives can leverage data-driven optimization, integrate sustainable technologies, adapt to new service models, and overcome specific barriers to innovation. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: By delineating this underexplored territory, this paper concludes that the vast technological landscape, while not yet a focus of cooperative-centric research, holds immense potential for the sector. It frames a series of vital questions arising from this gap as a crucial opportunity for future inquiry, positioning this review as a foundational guide for researchers and cooperatives to navigate the technological evolution of transport.
