CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO: REPRESENTATIONS OF GENDER AND ETHNICITY IN BECOS DA MEMÓRIA (2006)
INTRODUCTION: This text seeks to analyze and contextualize contemporary Brazilian society, through the work of Conceição Evaristo, Becos da Memória (2006), considering gender and race within this time frame. AIMS: We discuss how this novel expresses the legacy of slavery left upon the Black population of Brazil, seeking to understand how the author debates the role of institutions and the construction of thought in this period, for the formation of a social body and the experiences of men and women represented in her characters. The time frame is situated at the end of the Military Dictatorship in Brazil, in the 1980s. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We use the interdisciplinarity between Literature, Sociology, and History to unite gender discourse, racial issues, and the panorama of Brazilian society at the time. The method adopted was descriptive, analytical, and bibliographical research. RESULTS: From this methodology, it is understood that the analysis of the work interconnects Afro-Brazilian literature with historiography, as a document capable of bringing the marks of slavery into contemporary society. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: In this work, the strength of Cultural History is understood as a way to give voice to “escrevivência” and to collective memory.
