CAPACITY-BUILDING WORKSHOPS IN VILA TORRES – CURITIBA
INTRODUCTION: The research and outreach project “Women and the Right to the City: Strengthening and Disseminating Everyday Community Practices” examines the networks of solidarity, knowledge, and practices that sustain women’s collectives in Vila Torres (Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil). Vila Torres, with approximately nine thousand inhabitants, is situated between the Prado Velho and Jardim Botânico neighborhoods, at the entrance to the capital, along the banks of the Belém River. The territory is notably recognized for its recycling activities. AIMS: Upon completion of the initial phase (PIBIC 2023–2024), which was devoted to identifying existing practices within the community, as well as mapping local knowledge and needs, the subsequent stage (PIBIC 2024–2025) seeks to design and implement workshops. These workshops will address priority areas, namely: Information and Digital Technologies, Social Cartography, Leadership and Social Participation, as well as Environmental Education and Risk Management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The structure of the workshops was developed on the basis of the mapping of community practices, local knowledge, and demands identified during the previous phase (PIBIC 2023–2024). The undergraduate research fellow actively engaged in the planning, production, and documentation of the thematic workshops, in addition to preparing digital materials—such as cards and posts—for the dissemination of activities through social media. RESULTS: The experience in Vila Torres, owing to its scope and diversity, underscored the necessity of tailoring the workshops to distinct groups of women within the community. While the topics addressed were broad in scope, the heterogeneous experiences, routines, and everyday practices observed within the same locality revealed the impossibility of treating all residents as a homogeneous group, given the multiplicity of social profiles. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Communication with community members remains ongoing, thereby enabling the research team to analyze the outcomes of the workshops in collaboration with local participants.
